Mobility in Photos

Your City. Your Lens. Your Voice.

Every street, park, and trail in Savannah tells a story, and we want to see it through yours. The Healthy Savannah Photovoice Project invites residents to capture photos and record observable field data that show how our community supports or challenges opportunities for physical activity.

Together, we can highlight what’s working, identify what needs improvement, and build a healthier, more active Savannah for everyone.

What is Photovoice and How Does It Support Savannah?

Photovoice is a participatory research method that employs observable qualitative data, such as photographs and field notes, to present community members a visual means of sharing their experiences and opinions on the various aspects affecting their lives—whether it is to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges they face within their communities or to inspire hope in others with positive experiences that can be found in our day-to-day lives.

By collecting such information from residents across every neighborhood, Healthy Savannah can better understand how our sidewalks, trails, parks, and streets shape daily life. These insights help us to better communicate with city leaders and planners to advocate for environments that make physical activity easier, safer, and more accessible for everyone.

Our Goals

We believe everyone deserves access to safe, welcoming spaces for physical activity. The Photovoice Project supports Healthy Savannah’s Physical Activity Strategy by:

  • Identifying areas that make it hard to be physically active: such as uneven or unaccommodating terrain, environmental hazards, safety and maintenance concerns, and more.
  • Reflecting on equitable access: by observing who has safe, walkable spaces nearby, and who doesn’t. This is vital for those with mobility issues or other disabilities that make physical activity difficult.
  • Observing how local trails and parks are used: different groups of people, including families, cyclists, runners, and others, have varying needs when using local trails and parks. Understanding these diverse requirements can help to create more inclusive and functional spaces.
  • Sharing stories through photos and data: to inspire community action and shape policies that make Savannah a healthier place for everyone.

How You Can Get Involved

We invite everyone—residents, students, parents, walkers, bikers, and explorers—to share what you see in Savannah. Your voice matters and your photos can help shape the future of physical activity in Savannah.

Submit your photos showing:

  • Areas where safety or accessibility could improve.
  • Sidewalks, crossings, and objects that need repair.
  • Parks, playgrounds, or trails that inspire community engagement and activity.
  • Any space that affects how you move through our city.
