Healthy Savannah is dedicated to creating equitable policies, systems, and environments that foster a culture of health for all residents of Savannah. Through strong partnerships, community engagement, and evidence-based advocacy, we work to ensure that every resident has access to opportunities that support well-being.
The Policy & Board Engagement Intern will support Healthy Savannah’s leadership by assisting with board operations, governance initiatives, and public policy research. This role is ideal for students interested in nonprofit leadership, public policy, public health, community advocacy, or organizational governance.
The intern will gain first-hand experience with the inner workings of a nonprofit board of directors and learn how policy change influences health outcomes across communities.
Assist with preparation of board and committee meeting materials (agendas, minutes, presentations, reports).
Attend board of directors and committee meetings as appropriate; provide note-taking, follow-up summaries, and action-item tracking.
Support board member onboarding and orientation processes.
Conduct research to support board initiatives, strategic priorities, and governance updates.
Help maintain and organize board records, contact lists, and compliance documentation.
Conduct research on local, state, and national policies affecting public health, equity, nutrition, physical activity, transportation, and related areas.
Summarize policy proposals, legislative updates, and regulatory changes for leadership and board review.
Assist with the development of policy briefs, fact sheets, and advocacy materials.
Track key policy timelines, public comment periods, and voting schedules relevant to Healthy Savannah’s mission.
Support coalition-building efforts by attending community meetings, listening sessions, or partner events.
Draft talking points, newsletter content, and public-facing updates related to policy initiatives.
Help create board-related communications to strengthen engagement and alignment.
Maintain ongoing communication with partner organizations and community stakeholders as directed.
Assist leadership with day-to-day tasks related to governance and policy strategy.
Support the coordination of special projects, workshops, or advocacy campaigns.
Provide general administrative support as needed to advance strategic policy goals.
Interest in public health, policy, nonprofit management, political science, or related field.
Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
Comfort engaging with community partners, stakeholders, and leadership-level individuals.
Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and virtual meeting tools.
By the end of the internship, the student will:
Understand nonprofit governance and the role of a board of directors.
Gain experience in policy research, analysis, and advocacy.
Develop skills in professional communication, collaboration, and strategic planning.
Build knowledge of health equity initiatives shaping policy in Savannah.
Strengthen their ability to translate research into actionable recommendations.
