Healthy Eating

Proper nutrition is essential in keeping current and future generations of Savannahians healthy across the lifespan. The availability of healthy, affordable food contributes to a person’s diet and risk of related chronic diseases.

People who eat a healthy diet live longer and are at lower risk for serious health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Eating healthier can help manage these conditions and prevent complications. Additionally, breastfeeding helps protect against childhood illnesses, including ear and respiratory infections, and asthma.

We seek an environment where the healthy choice is the easy choice. In nutrition, this means that in both food retail and community settings, having the option to select nutritious, healthful foods over sugary, processed ones can empower our community. Thus, creating and supporting healthy food environments is an important part of our public health work.
