On October 17, 2013, City Manager Stephanie Cutter presented sketches to announce the city’s vision for the new proposed arena and Canal District. The designated location is along Stiles Avenue and Gwinnett Street. The area will accommodate cyclists, walkers, and pedestrians. “The Louisville Road train trussle will be transformed into a walkway bridge, the corner of Stiles and Gwinnett will be groomed into an historic focal point and the Ogeechee and Springfield Canals will create an inviting area to go for a stroll” (WTOC). This area was designated because of its accessibility to I-16, I-516, and the Talmadge Bridge, economic benefit to the area, and the potential to use a public-private partnership that would return some of the land to the tax digest. The proposed West Boundary Canal District will have a huge impact on accessibility for residents, attract tourists’ traffic, and increase revenue for surrounding businesses.
