Healthy Savannah moves fresh food to the front of the line

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTGS) — Healthy Savannah partnered with the YMCA for an initiative to make healthy food options convenient for shoppers by placing produce next to the checkout.

Saturday, they launched this program at Jones’ Red and White in Habersham Village.

“This is a problem that we’re experiencing nationwide, which is again, food apartheid: the lack of healthy food options that are available, especially in certain communities,” Ashley Rainge, Healthy Savannah organizer, said, “And with the amount of grocery stores that we have in Savannah, it’s still not reaching all the people.”

Rainge said Red and White’s is their first stop, but the plan is to expand this initiative so that every grocery store in Savannah is onboard. She said the city is working on ordinances that, if passed, will make the program more appealing to bigger grocery stores, as well.
