Local organizations partner to create breastfeeding-friendly workplaces

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act was passed more than two years ago, but Healthy Savannah and the Gateway Community Service Board are partnering to bring new attention to the law to help build breastfeeding-friendly communities.

PUMP requires workplaces with 50 or more employees to provide a safe, private space for mothers to breastfeed or pump breast milk. Time must also be provided mothers during their work day.

The lactation rooms don’t need to include more than a comfortable chair, a refrigerator and a door to offer privacy.

According to Healthy Savannah, several local businesses presently conform with the PUMP Act, but they are hoping to remind the community that the law is out there.
